Utah Tech University offers a customizable pathway for non-traditional students to complete their bachelor's degree through the Bachelor of Individualized Studies program. Whether a returning student with a tapestry of college credits and work experiences, or someone whose plans have been interrupted by the twists and turns of life, the program aims to remove obstacles that may have impeded students' educational journeys in the past.
The BIS program allows students to create a unique, multidisciplinary major tailored to their career goals. At its core, the program aims to break down the barriers that limit educational progress. Students work closely with advisors to evaluate existing credits and determine their applicability to the customized degree plan.
"When I describe my degree, potential employers are impressed," said Kyla Wigley, a current student in the program. "I receive comments on how applicable and useful my skills are."
The distinctive feature of this program is in its commitment to providing individualized guidance and mentorship. Each student collaborates closely with advisors, the coordinator and faculty mentors who assist them in utilizing all of the available resources to help achieve their goal. This collaborative process sets the program apart from more conventional general studies degrees.
"It makes your education so much more enjoyable," said current student Hannah Allen. "I know the reason behind every class I am taking."
The BIS program has allowed me to design a degree that is relevant to my past, current and future experiences. It has made all the things I have accomplished relevant and provided a way for me to achieve a goal that I set for myself over 37 years ago.

The journey begins with a meeting with an advisor, where potential students can explore if the BIS program aligns with their aspirations. Once enrolled, the first semester focuses on helping the student create a strategic plan and building a specialized degree from courses available across all disciplines in order to reach a specific professional goal. The objective is not just to earn a degree, but to be effective and successful in their field.
The BIS program offers flexibility in terms of learning. Students can choose to complete their studies through available online classes, in person via campus courses or through a combination of both. This adaptability makes it accessible to those juggling work and family obligations.
"The BIS program has allowed me to design a degree that is relevant to my past, current and future experiences," said current student Stephanie Hoglan. "It has made all the things I have accomplished relevant and provided a way for me to achieve a goal that I set for myself over 37 years ago."
While rigorous, the BIS program boasts an unusually high completion rate of approximately 90%. This degree is not a shortcut. Dedication and hard work are required, all facilitated by the program's individualized support. "We believe our students are capable. What has happened in the past doesn't have to happen in the future," said Nancy Ross, department chair of the Utah Tech University BIS program.
The Bachelor of Individualized Studies program provides an alternative to traditional education models. It aims to serve students whose life circumstances prevented degree completion. According to the university, personalized guidance, student commitment and a rigorous review process equip non-traditional learners to finish as confident, career-ready graduates.
