LOGAN — In a low-scoring affair, Logan picked up its second win of the season over a visiting Juan Diego team Friday night.

The game itself was uneventful for much of the night, but the Logan Grizzlies came up big in the final minutes of the game to secure a 14-7 victory over the Soaring Eagles.

Juan Diego featured a physical run game that appeared to have the upper hand for much of the night, but it proved to be too one dimensional and Logan's defense halted the Eagles' progress in important red zone situations and forced key turnovers to limit the scoring.

Logan's offense had struggles of its own, though. With a share of turnovers and mistakes of their own, the Grizzlies kept the game a predominantly defensive showcase. Only 7 total points had been posted when the first half came to a close.

Logan's senior quarterback Keaton Pond acknowledged the struggles the team faced and credited the team's victory on its defense.

"No matter what happens in a game … we can rely on each other, and I think that's really important," Pond said.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies' defense came up big after their own disappointing offensive drive ultimately resulted in a punt. Logan got the ball back after it recovered a fumble inside the Juan Diego 10-yard line.

Pond, then, led his offense back onto the field and connected on a 9-yard pass to senior Cooper Redd to take the lead late in the game. The same duo connected for a touchdown earlier in the game to give Logan a 7-0 lead.

Though attendance at the game was minimal, Logan's students had a great showing to support the team. After the game, Pond sprinted to the stands to celebrate with his fellow classmates. Pond said he has always dreamed of playing in front of that crowd as a kid, and Friday was his first victory at home as a starter.

"It's awesome," he said.

Logan improves to 2-2 on the season and begins region play next week in Garland against Bear River, while Juan Diego drops to 0-3 and will seek its first win of the season next week in a non-region game at Manti.
