Sam Penrod reporting A driver plowed onto the lawn of a Provo elementary, hitting and hurting two young children. It could've been worse: The car missed more than a dozen other kids in the way.

Police don't yet know what caused the woman to make such a dangerous detour.

The accident happened Wednesday afternoon just as the elementary students were on their way home. Two of them were in serious condition in the hospital.

The students were outside of Timpanogos Elementary School in Provo, when a 47-year-old woman, who was coming to pick up a student at the school, lost control of her SUV and ran onto the school grounds.

A six-year-old boy was hit first. Officers say the impact of that hit threw the boy away from the car and likely saved him from being run over.

The car kept going and sped up into the school loading dock, where an eleven year-old was jumping from the platform. That boy landed under the car's front bumper, which saved him from being pinned between the car and the dock.

The woman driving the car got out, but witnesses said she collapsed and she was also taken to the hospital.

Capt. Rick Healey, Provo Police Dept. "Something happened, according to her she blacked out or was unconscious, anyway the car accelerated and it made its way through about 20 kids. Fortunately for 18 of them, they were alright, but two of them got hit."

Both students that were injured were taken to nearby Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

The eleven-year-old started having complications from a skull fracture, so he was later airlifted to Primary Children's Medical Center.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, rather they suspect it was the result of a medical problem.
