SALT LAKE CITY — Four teens were arrested early Saturday after an alleged attempt to steal a rental car at the Salt Lake City International Airport failed.
About 12:19 a.m., police at the airport were notified that four teens had attempted to steal a Nissan Altima owned by a rental car company. The four teens had placed traffic cones over the tire shredders in the rental garage before attempting to leave in the vehicle, according to police.
The tire shredders deflated the tires of the Nissan despite the cones and the teens exited the car, then attempting to steal another rental car, police added. A car drove by and the teens began to run, even attempting to jump over a fence.
All four teens were stopped by police who found "multiple sets of rental keys in the possession of the suspects during the time of arrest," said a news release.
Police said several of the teens had consumed alcohol and marijuana.
Two teens, ages 13 and 15, were siblings and released to their parents. Another teen, a 15-year-old, was released to her mother. An additional 15-year-old was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
Criminal charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, are expected, according to police.
The identities of those involved were not released.
