ROY — A 5-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being hit by a truck while on a bike on Wednesday, police say.
The boy's mother, Jennifer Roberts, said 5-year-old Bentley had been riding his bike with a friend on Wednesday evening, and was hit while trying to cross the street. Roberts said the driver stopped for Bentley's friend, but didn't see Bentley.
"Seeing him laying in the middle of the road not moving, looks like he's lifeless right there. I was scared, crying," she said.
Officers responded to a pedestrian collision at 2600 West and 4400 South at 6:02 p.m. on Wednesday, Roy police spokesman Stuart Hackworth said. The 5-year-old was taken to a hospital and then transferred by helicopter to Primary Children's Hospital in critical condition, he said.
Roberts said Bentley suffered a lacerated liver and fractures around his pelvis and his hips, but said she was relieved to learn that he won't need surgery. She said he was in good spirits on Thursday.
An only child, Bentley shares a special bond with his mother, she said.
"He just turned 5 in August," she said. "He was just diagnosed with autism."
"I told him that there's a lot of people asking about him and he had tears coming out of his eyes," she continued. "Crying a little bit. He's so happy."
The driver of the truck was an adult male who was cooperative, police said. Officers are still investigating, Hackworth said.
"I hope the driver is doing OK," Roberts said. "I can't imagine how it would feel (to) hit a kid or anybody at all."
Roberts' family has set up a GoFundMe* fundraiser in hopes of raising money to pay for medical bills and lost wages.
