FILLMORE — Residents of the Virginia Hills subdivision in Fillmore have been given permission to return to their homes after being evacuated since July 8 due to the Halfway Hill Fire that has burned over 11,000 acres, officials said Wednesday.

The fire began Friday afternoon from an abandoned campfire, officials said, resulting in four people being arrested Sunday. Police say the four attempted to extinguish their campfire but left the site and did not alert emergency crews when they saw a blaze erupt that they were concerned had been caused by their fire.

Containment of the 11,637-acre fire was at 10% Wednesday evening, officials said.

"Overnight, downslope winds will continue to push smoke in the valley," officials said in an earlier update. "This may lead to unhealthy air conditions. Stay indoors and limit outdoor exertion when smoke is heavy. Those with sensitive or existing health issues should consult with their health care provider for specific instructions."
