DRAPER — The Canyons School District says a weapon was seized at a Draper school Tuesday after a student alerted authorities to the weapon using the SafeUT app.

The school district said in an email to parents Tuesday that a student brought a weapon to Draper Park Middle School earlier in the day. However, thanks to an alert student who used the SafeUT mobile app, authorities were notified quickly and a school resource officer started investigating.

The officer was able to "quickly contain any potential harm to the school," the email said, and the weapon was removed from campus. The district did not say what kind of weapon it was.

School officials noted in the email, "It is not believed the student intended to do any harm, but the incident did cause concern among the small group of students who were shown the weapon in private." The district said that the matter is being "handled swiftly" in accordance with district policy, though privacy laws prevent the district from making student disciplinary actions public.

Draper police "may conduct a separate investigation" to see if criminal charges are warranted, the district email said. Counselors will be made available for students in need to talk about the incident.

The district said student safety is their main concern, and it greatly appreciates the student who reported the weapon using the SafeUT app.
