SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding its 192nd Annual General Conference Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3. This blog summarizes the key points from the Sunday morning session.

Presdient Russell M. Nelson — The power of spiritual momentum

"My dear brothers and sisters, I love you," President Russell M. Nelson proclaimed Sunday morning.The president of the church shared that he had been to Ukraine and Russia many times, and that he loves the people there dearly. He invited listeners to fast and pray for those affected by the conflict, and stated that war is a violation of everything Jesus Christ taught.

"Bury any and all inclinations to hurt others," he said.President Nelson then shared an example of momentum being used to carry a sports team to victory, and asked, "What can ignite spiritual momentum?" He shared five suggestions to help us maintain positive spiritual momentum:

First, Get on the covenant path and stay there. President Nelson shared that taking the sacrament weekly and making covenants in the temple is the only path that leads to exaltation and eternal life.

Second, discover the joy of daily repentance. If you have strayed from the covenant path, President Nelson urged immediate repentance, which brings joy and relief.

Third, learn about God and how he works. He said discernment between God and Satan comes through daily prayer.

Fourth, seek and expect miracles. "Do the spiritual work to seek miracles. Prayerfully ask God to help you exercise that kind of faith," President Nelson said.

Fifth, end conflict in your personal life. "Exercise the humility, courage and strength required, both to forgive and to seek forgiveness."

Elder Hugo E. Martinez — Teaching self-reliance to children and youth

The remarks from Elder Hugo E. Martinez, of the Seventy, focused on developing and teaching self-reliance."Striving to be self-reliant is part of our work along the covenant path that leads us back to Heavenly Father and to his Son, Jesus Christ. It will strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and joyfully bind us to him," he said.Elder Martinez said building self-reliance should not be viewed as a program or event, but a doctrine of the gospel of Jesus Christ."We become self-reliant throughout our lives by growing in spiritual strength, physical and emotional health, pursuing our education and employment, and being temporally prepared," he said. Elder Martinez noted similarities between self-reliance and the church's youth program and said the four principles taught in each program are similar.The principles of the Children and Youth Development Program help teach children about personal development using a unique approach for each child, Elder Martinez said.

This is a way that she lends support as encouraged in the proclamation.He said self reliance is a process of learning. "It never ends; it is a continuous, daily process."Elder Martinez ended his talk by encouraging members to do three things — be examples of service, live and teach self-reliance, and build self-reliance as part of the gospel.—Emily Ashcraft

Elder Ronald A. Rasband — To heal the world

Elder Ronald A. Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke on religious freedom, an attack on which, he described, as "another scourge sweeping the globe" as governments, communities and opponents of faith "seek to impose restrictions on expressions of heartfelt convictions.""Such an attitude marginalizes people devaluing personal principles, fairness, respect, spirituality and peace of conscience," Elder Rasband said, later adding, "Efforts to curtail such religious liberty are not new. Throughout history, people of faith have suffered mightily at the hands of others. Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are no different."

Honors the first and second great commandments, "placing God at the center of our lives."

Fosters expressions of belief, hope and peace.

Inspires people to help others.

Acts as a unifying and rallying force for shaping values and morality.

Elder Michael T. Ringwood — For God so loved us

Elder Michael T. Ringwood of the Seventy began his talk by sharing that Jesus Christ died for mankind so that we can all return home to heaven. His plan for each of us is personal, and he knows our hearts, names, and what he needs us to do, he said.Elder Ringwood then shared examples of how Moses, Esther and Joseph Smith sought out Christ and were greeted with familiar and personal revelation.

Whether we are forgiving others or seeking forgiveness, we must follow Joseph's example, he said."Why does Heavenly Father's personalized plan for us include helping others return to him? Because that is how we become like Jesus Christ," Elder Ringwood said.

One day, Paul proclaimed his testimony at the wrong church. On the day he was baptized, a church member told Paul he was looking for a new church when Paul's testimony led him back to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "You saved my life," the man told Paul.Elder Ringwood concluded, "This is my witness on this beautiful Sabbath morning. May we write it on our hearts and allow it to fill our souls with peace, hope and eternal joy: God so loved us that he sent his only begotten son not to condemn us, but to save us."— Katie Workman

Sister Amy A. Wright — Christ heals that which is broken

Jesus Christ is the source of all healing, capable of fixing all that is broken in life, said Sister Amy D. Wright, second counselor in the Primary general presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."He can heal broken relationships with God, broken relationships with others and broken parts of ourselves," she said.Fixing requires repentance, and repentance often requires forgiveness. Forgiveness is a universal commandment, required of "all men," she added, quoting scripture."Extending forgiveness can take tremendous courage and humility," Sister Wright said. "It can also take time. It requires us to put our faith and trust in the Lord as we assume accountability for the condition of our hearts."

Such waiting stresses patience as they "wait upon the Lord," but it can also put members of the church in a good place, teaching gospel principles like long-suffering and endurance as they wait."Waiting upon the Lord can be a sacred place — a place of polishing and refining where we can come to know the Savior in a deeply personal way," Sister Wright said. "Waiting upon the Lord may also be a place where we find ourselves asking, 'O God, where art thou?'; A place where spiritual perseverance requires us to exercise faith in Christ by intentionally choosing him again and again and again."I know this place and I understand this type of waiting."

Elder D. Todd Christofferson — Our relationship with God

Much like the biblical story of Job, Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles noted that we may feel — in times of suffering – that God has abandoned us.Elder Christofferson said it is easy to believe that if we keep to certain rules, God will reward us at a set schedule. "We ought not to think of God's plan as a cosmic vending machine," he warned. But even amid uncertainty, he noted that Heavenly Father is willing to guide us along, and we can anticipate a growing sense of faith and trust in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.As "joint-heirs of Christ," our refinement will not be easy, but the path leads to eternal happiness, Elder Christofferson said.
