PRICE — A wanted fugitive who police say rammed a vehicle being driven by an Adult Probation and Parole officer trying to arrest him, was taken into custody Wednesday following a chase with Utah Highway Patrol troopers in Carbon County.
Agents were looking Wednesday for Christopher Anthony Nelson, 30, of Clearfield, who was a probation fugitive. "As our agents surrounded his vehicle, the suspect drove his vehicle into an AP&P car," said Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kaitlin Felsted.
The agent sustained undisclosed injuries and was taken to a local hospital where he was treated and later released, Felsted said.
Other agents continued chasing after Nelson for a short time, but then terminated their pursuit due to public safety concerns.
Later that evening, UHP troopers spotted Nelson on U.S. 6 heading toward Price. A trooper attempted to pull Nelson over but said he again fled. Other troopers attempted to spike Nelson's tires but were unsuccessful. UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden said when the opportunity presented itself, a trooper used a PIT maneuver on Nelson to stop his vehicle.
Officers from multiple agencies, including Adult Probation and Parole, responded to the scene where Nelson refused to get out of his car, Roden said. The Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter also responded to the incident.
After further negotiations, Nelson eventually surrendered.
Nelson pleaded guilty to theft by deception in 2019 for selling mattresses online but then never delivering the mattresses after receiving money, according to court documents. Nelson continually came up with excuses to the would-be buyer, including telling them he ran out of gas, got in an accident, got a flat tire and eventually telling the victim his trailer with the mattresses had been stolen, court records state. Nelson was sentenced to three years of probation.
He was also sentenced to three years probation in 2017 for convictions on a series of crimes, including theft by deception, forged checks and fleeing from police who were trying to arrest him for outstanding warrants, according to court records.
