TOOELE — Tooele police responding to a domestic violence incident Wednesday exchanged gunshots with the homeowner, critically injuring the man.
The 49-year-old man was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in Salt Lake City in critical condition after being shot in the torso, said Tooele Police Lt. Jeremy Hansen. The man, whose name has not yet been released, was stable later Wednesday, Hansen said.
About 4 a.m., a woman called emergency dispatchers saying that her husband was intoxicated, armed and suicidal and had left their home, according to Hansen. A short time later, before officers arrived at the house, the wife called back to say her husband had returned and that police were no longer needed.
About an hour later, however, the woman called 911 again to report her husband was being "physical" with her, Hansen said. Emergency dispatchers could hear the wife yelling at her husband to get off her. As police were en route to the house near 900 West and 600 South, dispatchers relayed information to officers that the husband was still armed and threatening to shoot them, Hansen said.
When officers arrived, they found the man in the garage. During a confrontation, the man pointed a gun at the officer, who then fired two rounds, striking the gunman in the torso, Hansen said. The gunman then fired one round back at police, but the officers were not injured.
Agents from the State Bureau of Investigation will be conducting the officer-involved shooting investigation.
