SALT LAKE CITY — No injuries or major damage were reported after crews responded to a fire at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in downtown Salt Lake City on Wednesday.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department first reported the fire at 15 E. South Temple just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

No injuries were reported from the fire, and there was minimal damage to the building, according to Salt Lake City Fire Department Capt. Anthony Burton. Floors that were affected by the fire were evacuated, but the fire was knocked down within 30 minutes, Burton said.

Construction debris on the roof of the building may have caught fire, the fire department said.

A representative of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said the building will be operational on Thursday.

"At around 7 this evening, a fire started on the second-floor roof of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building. The most likely cause of the fire is from combustible construction materials that ignited on their own," church spokesperson Eric Hawkins said in a statement. "We are grateful for the quick response of emergency personnel, who were able to extinguish the fire and are on site conducting their investigation. We are also grateful that no one was injured in this incident and that property damage is minimal and the building will be operational tomorrow."
