TAYLORSVILLE — A Utah man was charged Monday with shooting another man in the face at point-blank range.
Kyle Gregory Loyd, 35, is charged in 3rd District Court with attempted murder and discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, both first-degree felonies; obstructing justice, a second-degree felony; and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.
Loyd's ex-girlfriend, with whom he has a child, had been dating a new man for just a few days when their 5-year-old son "had an issue" with the new man, police say. The man was told to leave the apartment, but he left his debit card, a knife and a collapsible baton behind, according to charging documents.
The woman then called Loyd to help calm down their son.
"Loyd told (the woman) he would 'put a bullet in his face,' and to call him if (the man) returned," the charges state. Later that night, the man called and asked if he could retrieve the items he left. Shortly after he called her, she called Loyd.
When Loyd arrived at the Callaway Apartments, 1141 W. 3900 South, he confronted the man in the parking lot and told him to leave his ex-girlfriend and his son alone. The man responded by getting in Loyd's face while saying, 'You wanna go?' and then pushed Loyd, according to the charges.
Loyd then pulled out a handgun and racked the slide as the man knelt behind his car door and turned his back to Loyd and covered his head, the charges state.
"Loyd approached him and as (the man) turned his head towards Loyd, Loyd shot (the man) in the face," according to the charging documents. "The bullet entered (his) face on his left cheek and exited the top of the left side of his neck."
The man was treated at a local hospital and was later released. Police say Loyd fled the state shortly after the incident and was arrested in Elko, Nevada.
