SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake police arrested a man accused of stealing a bag at the Salt Lake City International Airport that had approximately $6,500 worth of clothes and jewelry inside it.

Logan Daniel Westering, 30, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of theft and theft of services.

On May 5, Westering flew into Salt Lake City from Las Vegas. He picked up his luggage from one baggage claim carousel, but then went across the lobby to a second carousel and took a bright yellow bag after looking over his shoulder, a police affidavit states.

The owner of the bag told police that it "contained jewelry and clothing items totaling a worth of $6,500," according to the affidavit.

After allegedly taking the bag, Westering then got into his car and exited the parking area of the airport by speeding up behind another car that had just paid to get out, and staying close behind the first vehicle before the parking gate arm went down, according to the affidavit.

Police identified Westering by tracing the license plate number on his vehicle through surveillance video footage. On Wednesday, detectives went to the home where he was renting a room and reported finding the yellow bag. Multiple pairs of shoes and other items that had been in the bag were spread out in different areas of his bedroom, the affidavit states.

"(Westering) initially acted like he did not know what bag we were looking for, then after retrieving the bag, he claimed it was a mistake but had no valid excuse as to why he did not return the bag once he realized it was not his," the affidavit says.
