2 charged in connection with shooting at Salt Lake area convenience store

MILLCREEK — Two people have been charged in connection with a shooting at a Salt Lake area convenience store where police say a clerk amazingly escaped uninjured.

Jibril Ali Ahmed, 20, of Murray, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; possession of a firearm by a restricted person, theft by receiving stolen property, and obstructing justice, all second-degree felonies; and six counts of shooting at a person, a third-degree felony.

Jackson Baka Issa, 20, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony.

On April 3, both men entered a 7-Eleven on April 2 about 6:30 a.m. at 4051 S. State in Millcreek and brought food items to the counter to purchase, according to police.

Issa's bank card was declined three times, according to a police affidavit, leading to an argument with the cashier. As the two men were leaving the store, one of them "produced a handgun and fired six rounds at the cashier," nearly hitting him several times, a police affidavit states. The clerk told police one man "pointed the gun directly at his head and fired."

Charging documents state that when police arrived, they found one of the store's doors "heavily damaged from gunfire," several shell casings inside the store, and "bullet holes around the front clerk counter." Seven shell casings were recovered, the charges state.

Store surveillance cameras recorded the men as they drove away. Investigators used that video to identify the car which led them to Issa, according to charging documents. After he was arrested, however, Issa refused to reveal the identity of the other man he was with, the charges state.

Ahmed was tracked down and arrested. Detectives also seized a backpack from him that contained a gun believed to have been used in the shooting, the charges state. Ahmed told police he fired about six times and "asked several times if the clerk had died," according to the charges. He told police he obtained the gun by breaking into a car.

In 2019, Ahmed was convicted in another shooting incident. According to charging documents, on May 31, 2019, Ahmed fired several rounds at another vehicle when the occupants "yelled gang affiliated comments at him." He was convicted of rioting, a third-degree felony, received a suspended prison sentence and was placed on three years probation, according to court documents.
