SALT LAKE CITY — A popular Sugar House diner announced it's shutting its doors after 20 years.

Blue Plate Diner, located at 2041 S. 2100 East, announced Thursday via social media that it will be shutting down on May 4.

"After all these years, countless eggs benedict and the thousands of patrons made friends, we would like to say THANK YOU to each and everyone of you," the post reads, in part. "Our hearts are full with all the love Salt Lake has shown us over the years and it'll be a sad day when we shut the doors for the last time."

Since opening, the diner won acclaim from its fans. Just last year, City Weekly named it "best breakfast" for its annual "Best of Utah" awards. It's an award that the diner has won several other times. City Weekly labeled Blue Plate Diner as a "heavy hitter in the breakfast arena."

The diner was also featured twice on the Food Network's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives."In one segment, host Guy Fieri praised the diner's vegan burger as something that he would order again "in a heartbeat."

Individuals responding to the diner's announcement last week were dismayed by the news.

"Nooo!! Such an iconic restaurant to SLC!" one person responded.

Another wrote: "So much love for the (Blue Plate Diner) family! Thanks for all of the good times and good food!"

The closure comes after a particularly rough stretch for restaurants across the state and country. For instance, Utah Restaurant Association leadership said last September that about 10% of all of the state's restaurants had permanently closed after the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. It was estimated that billions of dollars in revenue were lost throughout the industry.

It was clear then that Blue Plate Diner would also shut down in the foreseeable future. It was revealed during a Salt Lake City Planning Commission meeting, also last September, that the Blue Plate Diner property had been sold to developers seeking to build a new mixed-use development project at the corner of 2100 South and 2100 East. The project will add a little more than 100 residential units and space for commercial space for the area.

The planning commission supported the plan for the project.
