CLEARFIELD — A man already charged in a sex abuse case in Utah County was charged with new crimes Thursday accusing him of knocking on apartment doors in Clearfield and raping a woman who allowed him in.
Stephen Michael Dombroski, 44, whose hometown is listed in court documents as Navarre, Florida, is now charged in 2nd District Court with rape and forcible sodomy, first-degree felonies; lewdness, a class B misdemeanor; and giving false information to an officer, a class C misdemeanor.
On Feb. 3, police were called to an apartment complex in Clearfield on a report of a man knocking on doors and trying to enter an apartment.
A woman later told police that Dombroski had knocked on her door asking to use the bathroom. Once inside the apartment, Dombroski exposed himself to the woman and said that "someone had paid him $150,000" to have sex with her, according to charging documents.
By that time, officers were arriving at the complex and the woman threatened to scream if Dombroski did not leave, the charges state.
Dombroski left the apartment and police found him in a stairwell. He told officers he was waiting for a ride. But police say Dombroski gave officers a false name and birthdate and he was initially released. When the officers discovered that he was lying, they found him again, this time in a laundry room, then issued him a citation and released him, according to the charges.
Police were called back to the apartment complex the next day to investigate a rape report.
A 65-year-old woman told investigators that someone had knocked on their door about 10:30 p.m. the night before. A man, later determined to be Dombroski, told the woman and her husband that "he was lost, freezing, not from the area, and that his phone was dying. He asked to come inside to get warm. The couple invited him in. After a while, the man asked to sleep on their couch. The couple allowed him to sleep on the couch," the charges state.
The husband said he was uncomfortable with Dombroski in the house and slept with his gun. But during the night, Dombroski went into the room where the woman was sleeping alone to sexually assault and rape her, according to the charges. The fearful woman waited until Dombroski left the next morning before telling her husband what had happened.
"Officers located (Dombroski) on Hill Air Force Base where he lives in a trailer," the charges state. "(He) stated that he was planning to move out of state soon."
In June, Dombroski was charged in Provo's 4th District Court with forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony. In that case, Dombroski is accused of approaching a woman who was camping in Five Mile Pass, making sexual advances and exposing himself. He is scheduled to be arraigned in that case on March 3.
