RIVERTON — A section of a major road in southwest Salt Lake County closed Thursday night and is expected to remain closed for the next seven months as construction of a new interchange at Bangerter Highway begins.

Crews began to shut down 12600 South at Bangerter Highway Thursday evening. By Friday morning, motorists were advised to use alternate routes or designated detours to use 12600 South. The closure is expected to remain in place through August, according to the Utah Department of Transportation.

Motorists will still be able to enter and exit Bangerter Highway at 12600 South throughout the next few months via right-hand turns. But east-west traffic on the road will be blocked at the highway.

The closure will allow UDOT crews to work on a new freestyle-like interchange on 12600 South at Bangerter Highway.

"Every time we build a new interchange on Bangerter Highway, it helps drivers get where they're going more safely and efficiently. We know this closure will be impactful, so we've worked closely with the city and local businesses to minimize inconvenience for the community," said Marwan Farah, UDOT Bangerter Interchanges project manager, in a statement Thursday.

Farah added that closing the road will help crews finish the project quicker, which he said would also drive down the final cost for taxpayers.

UDOT officials said construction will continue throughout days and nights and that residents and businesses in the area should prepare for the possibility of noise, dust and vibration from construction and large trucks that will come in and out of the worksite over the next seven months.

They also said there will be a few ways for motorists who need to use 12600 South to drive around the closure, particularly using 11400 South or 13400 South.

  • Drivers traveling east can use southbound Bangerter Highway to the 13400 South or northbound 4000 West to 11400 South and then take those roads east to reach 3600 West before traveling to 12600 South from there.
  • Drivers traveling west can use northbound Bangerter Highway to 11400 South before turning then and using southbound Bangerter Highway to 12600 South. They can also use southbound 3600 West to westbound 13400 South, and then take Mountain View Corridor north to 12600 South.
