SALT LAKE CITY — Elder Ulisses Soares, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his wife, Sister Rosana Soares, recently recovered from mild COVID-19 cases, a church spokesman said Friday. No other top leaders of the church were exposed to the couple.
Elder Soares, 62, is the third apostle in the church to contract the disease — Elder Gerrit W. Gong and his wife recovered from COVID-19 in October and Elder Dale G. Renlund and his wife recovered from the virus in December.
Elder Soares and his wife tested positive and recovered during the holiday break and were away from all other church leaders during that time, church spokesman Eric Hawkins said.
Following Elder Renlund's recent positive test in early December, all top leaders for the church tested negative for the virus.
The church has followed public health guidelines since the beginning of the novel coronavirus pandemic and also encourages its members to do the same.
