SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Tribune is welcoming a new face to serve as its top editor.

On Tuesday, the paper announced the hiring of Sacramento Bee Editor Lauren Gustus as its new executive editor. She will oversee the roughly 70-person newsroom staff beginning Dec. 3.

The announcement comes a few months after former executive editor of the paper, Jennifer Napier-Pierce, announced her resignation in August. Napier-Pierce has been tapped to serve as communications director for Gov.-elect Spencer Cox.

Editor Dave Noyce has temporarily filled the position as interim editor since Napier-Pearce's departure.

In replacing Napier-Pierce, Gustus will become the paper's third woman to lead as executive editor in its 150 years. Originally from Massachusetts, Gustus said she is excited to lead the Utah newspaper on its mission to bring needed stories to its community as the first legacy paper to become nonprofit.

"I am drawn to the opportunity to build a sustainable local news organization," Gustus said, according to the Tribune's report. "I'm confident that we can do that together at The Tribune."

The Salt Lake Tribune recently announced it will shift from daily to weekly publication along with the Deseret News as the two largest papers decided not to renew their Joint Operating Agreement next year. The newspapers will now move to an emphasis on their online products, with Deseret News also starting a monthly magazine.

While the two largest newspapers in the state are shifting focus, others are shutting down completely. On Monday, The Davis Clipper announced it will be closing down operations next month after 129 years in business. Its website will no longer exist and its weekly publication will cease.

Clarification: An earlier version of this article mistakenly listed Gustus' title as managing editor in a couple of instances.
