6 more schools pivot to online learning due to COVID-19 cases

SALT LAKE CITY — Six schools from across northern Utah are transitioning into online learning due to an increasing number COVID-19 cases, various school officials announced Thursday.

Box Elder School District

Box Elder High School officials announced via social media that the school will be transitioning to online learning on Nov. 16. Students will return to school following the Thanksgiving break.

Canyons School District

Canyons School District officials announced that students at Alta High School who are registered for on-campus classes will not attend school on Friday, Nov. 13. On that day, faculty and staff will prepare to begin teaching virtual classes for the next two weeks. The online instruction for all Alta students will begin Monday, Nov. 16; students will return to the classroom on Nov. 30.

The most recent reports from health authorities indicate that Alta has reached nearly a 2% COVID-19 threshold for moving a school online, according to the district's data dashboard.

Davis County School District

The Davis County School District issued a news release Thursday afternoon s announced that Bountiful and Viewmont high schools will be moving online immediately. Students at these schools will not have class on Friday, allowing teachers time to prepare for the transition. Online instruction will begin on Monday, Nov. 16, and students will return to the classroom on Nov. 30.

Granite School District

Granite School District also confirmed that Cottonwood High School will be transitioning to online learning effective immediately. Students will return to the classroom on Nov. 30. According to their district dashboard, district-wide there are 184 positive COVID-19 cases.

Weber School District

Orion Jr. High School in Harrisville will be moving to online instruction for the next two weeks, according to Weber School District officials. The district reports that nearly 250 students, faculty and staff are currently in quarantine. Classes will be canceled on Friday for a teacher preparation day, and then students will move to online instruction from Nov. 16 to Nov. 30.

During the closure, the school will be disinfected and sanitized, said district officials. Orion Jr. High is the fifth school in Weber School District to transition to online learning due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

Other closures

Davis, Layton and Wood Cross high schools, as well as Shoreline Junior High School, also entered remote learning on Thursday and will follow the same schedule that Bountiful and Viewmont highs are following, according to the school district.

Northridge and Syracuse high schools also are currently in remote learning and are expected to return to in-person classes on Nov. 19.
