OGDEN — America First Credit Union said it was the target of what may have been a "coordinated attempt at fraudulent activity" involving its network of ATMs.
KSL.com reached out to the credit union after several Utahns said they or someone they knew recently had money withdrawn from their account without their knowledge or consent.
Utahn Derek Lowe's son had money removed from his account, he said in an email to KSL.com. The money wasn't back as of Wednesday evening, but his son had filled out a form at the credit union requesting reimbursement, the father said.
Lowe said the lines at America First were filled with people having the same problem, and their customer service line was experiencing long wait times. Lowe and his wife froze their cards as a precaution.
In a statement, credit union spokesperson Nicole Cypers said America First "quickly identified and worked to correct an issue with our network of ATMs."
"This issue has been fixed and is believed to have been a coordinated attempt at fraudulent activity and was detected by AFCU’s fraud team," Cypers said. "We apologize for any temporary inconvenience while this issue is being corrected. The safety and integrity of our members' funds is always our first priority, and all of AFCU’s focus is on correcting this issue and preventing similar attempts in the future.”
In an email, the credit union said anyone who believes there has been an unauthorized attempt to access their account should contact America First at 800-999-3961 or visit their local branch as soon as possible.
