SANTAQUIN — Several fire engines and two helicopters are working for full containment on a fire in Santaquin Canyon.
Officials first got reports of the fire, named the Williams Fire, around 3 p.m. Sunday and estimated it at more than 400 acres just after 7 p.m. Utah County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon said the fire was started by target shooters.
A few cabins and people are currently in the canyon, but no official evacuations have been made. Officers tried to evacuate a few cabins, but they were unoccupied. Pole Canyon Road is closed due to fire response.
Officials haven't given any official information on containment percentage; 13 engines, two water tenders, two dozers, three helicopters and six air tankers are working on containment.
In an unrelated fire, evacuations have been ordered for campgrounds around Ashley National Forest. Rock Creek area, Yellowpine, Miners Gulch and Rock Creek campgrounds have all been cleared along with dispersed campsites in the area. The closure in the Rock Creek Road Forest Service Road 134 has been moved to the Forest Boundry, according to Forest Officials.
A Red Flag Warning has been issued through Monday at 9 p.m. due to warm temperatures, strong wind and low humidity.
Saturday 22 mph winds pushed the East Fork Fire south in the Rock Creek drainage and is expected to move further south. Officials first reported that lightning caused the fire on August 21. As of Sunday, it has burned more than 5,000 acres and is only 22% contained.
