Herbert issues order updating low-risk guidelines

Gov. Gary Herbert issued an executive order on Wednesday updating the guidelines for the low-risk phase in the Utah Leads Together Plan. “We are making progress and we can see that these recommendations are working,” Herbert said in a statement. “I would like to express my gratitude to all who are taking these recommendations seriously, and stress that following these guidelines is crucial to ensuring the safety and health of us all.” The order updates social gathering, education, business, travel and events guidelines. All businesses within counties which are labeled yellow are allowed to operate so long as they adhere to specific guidelines. Additionally, facilities should implement symptom checking measures when possible. Updated travel guidelines advise people to avoid nonessential travel to places with higher COVID-19 transmission rates. For educational facilities, hand sanitizer must be made available to faculty, staff and students in each classroom. Face coverings must be worn by faculty and staff in situations where social distancing is not possible. Decisions about face coverings for students will be made by local school and charter boards in partnership with local health departments. 4 Salt Lake County cities to hold firework show in honor of those on COVID-19 frontlines

Riverton, Draper, Herriman, and South Jordan cities are holding firework shows on Saturday night to honor those working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. The show will originate from four locations — one in each city — and will sync up with audio played on the radio. “We are so excited to be hosting this firework show to salute all who have been on the front lines during COVID-19,” Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs said in a statement. “Due to the pandemic, one of our scheduled firework shows couldn’t go on as usual; however, after brainstorming with the fireworks company and our great city staff, we presented this idea instead.” The event will be held on Saturday evening at 10 p.m. More information is available here. — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Tooele County Health Department orders amphitheater closed amid concert controversy

The Tooele County Health Department issued a public health order on Wednesday to the owner of an amphitheater slated to hold a large free concert at the end of the month. Jason Manning, who owns The Amphitheater at Studio Ranch, was given a notice of closure by the county stating the concert, scheduled for Saturday, violates the temporary mass gathering code and poses “an imminent health hazard at this stage of the COVID-19 pandemic.” — Lauren Bennett, KSL.com

Salt Lake County recreation centers set to reopen

Nine Salt Lake County recreation centers will reopen Monday as businesses and other facilities begin slowly reopening after COVID-19 closures, according to a Wednesday news release. The facilities that will reopen Monday are:

County Ice Center, 5201 Murray Park Lane, Murray

Dimple Dell Recreation Center, 10670 S. 1000 East, Sandy

Fairmont Aquatic Center, 1044 Sugarmont Drive, Salt Lake City

JL Sorenson Recreation Center, 5350 W. Main Street, Herriman

Magna Recreation Center, 3270 S. 8400 West, Magna

Millcreek Community Center, 2266 E. Evergreen Ave., Millcreek

Northwest Recreation Center, 1255 Clark Ave., Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City Sports Complex, 645 S. Guardsman Way, Salt Lake City

Taylorsville Recreation Center, 4948 S. 2700 West, Taylorsville

Additionally, the new Draper Recreation Center and outdoor pool is expected to reopen July 1, which is the target date for other county-managed pools to reopen. The recreation centers will reopen under modified operations that will include social distancing guidelines to prevent further spread of COVID-19. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Utah sees 86 new cases of COVID-19, 4 more deaths

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 86 from Tuesday with four new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Wednesday’s totals give Utah 8,706 total confirmed cases, with 716 total hospitalizations and 105 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 8,620 cases in the state. The new numbers indicate a 1% increase in positive cases since Tuesday. Of the 200,626 total tests conducted in Utah so far, 4.3% were positive for COVID-19. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Utah State University resuming in-person classes this fall

Utah State University will resume in-person classes for the fall 2020 semester, the school announced Wednesday. “Our students have responded to this situation with grace and resilience, and we are excited to again see them come to our campuses,” USU President Noelle Cockett said in a news release. “We will be releasing more details about fall semester over the next several weeks, and students and their parents should monitor university communications for that information, knowing that USU will be ready.” The university will be implementing the state's guidelines for social distancing, face coverings and other hygiene measures to combat the further spread of COVID-19. Southern Utah University to resume in-person classes this fall

Southern Utah University will resume in-person classes this fall at its Cedar City campus, the school announced Wednesday. “This is a significant step in getting back to a sense of normalcy,” university President Scott L Wyatt said in a news release. “However, when students come to campus for the fall semester, the on-campus experience will be slightly different. We’ll take precautions to protect our campus community." The university's plan to resume classes on campus for the fall 2020 semester includes plans for social distancing, diagnostic testing and contact tracing, according to the release. The plan is dependent on the continued improvement of COVID-19 conditions in Utah, the release said. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Salt Lake City Twilight Concert Series cancels Decemberists show

The Salt Lake City Twilight Concert Series has canceled a Decemberists concert previously scheduled for Aug. 6. Organizers made the announcement on social media Wednesday morning. The concert was the only show that had been announced so far in the series. "We remain committed to bolstering our diverse artistic community within Salt Lake City and more information on the 2020 Twilight Concert Series will be coming soon," organizers said in an Instagram post. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Utah mother worries her son with autism will struggle to catch up after pandemic

An American Fork mom is worried that her 6-year-old son’s transition to homeschooling will leave him far, far behind the rest of the kids his age. That’s because he has autism and severe speech problems. It’s a challenge with no easy solution. Cooper is a champ on his bike. But life hasn’t been a smooth ride. “He was pretty much nonverbal until age 5,” said Loretta Tveten, Cooper’s mother, who lives with her family in American Fork. Cooper has autism and speech problems. But since he enrolled in Spectrum Academy last fall, his progress has been remarkable. — Heather Simonsen, KSL TV

Poll: Half of Americans would get a COVID-19 vaccine

Only about half of Americans say they would get a COVID-19 vaccine if the scientists working furiously to create one succeed, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That’s surprisingly low considering the effort going into the global race for a vaccine against the coronavirus that has sparked a pandemic since first emerging from China late last year. But more people might eventually roll up their sleeves: The poll, released Wednesday, found 31% simply weren’t sure if they’d get vaccinated. Another 1 in 5 said they’d refuse. — Associated Press

Business leaders say change to green could come in June

Not even two weeks into the yellow “low-risk” level, a state official said the latest data on coronavirus cases is moving in the right direction for Utah to transition to the “new normal” level as early as June. “We’re headed towards green because the data tells us that Utahns by and large are being responsible,” said Derek Miller, president and CEO of the Salt Lake Chamber and the chair of Utah’s COVID-19 Economic Response Task Force. “Moving from yellow to green is probably more of a step than when we moved from orange to yellow because green tells us we're getting to that new normal.” — Matt Rascon, KSL TV

Utah to host 9-team, 25-game NWSL 2020 Challenge Cup starting in June

Professional soccer is returning to Utah. The National Women’s Soccer League announced Wednesday that the state will host the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup, a 25-game tournament at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman. The tournament’s semifinal matchups and final will be played at Rio Tinto Stadium. The tournament will bring players from all nine NWSL teams to the state to live in hotels in the Salt Lake City area, or an “NWSL Village,” and to train at the Zions Bank Training Center in Herriman and America First Credit Union Field in Sandy. Players will be tested for COVID-19 before traveling to Utah and will continue to be monitored during their stay in the state. — Josh Furlong, KSL.com

First look at proposed state budget cuts deemed potentially ‘detrimental’ to public health

Utah lawmakers kicked off the process of slashing as much as $2 billion from the state budget to deal with the economic hit from the COVID-19 pandemic with a four-hour virtual meeting Tuesday detailing a long list of proposed cuts to the health, human services and workforce services departments. No decisions were made during the first of two meetings for the Social Services Appropriations Subcommittee, scheduled to meet again Friday to vote on proposed cuts of 2%, 5% and 10% in the largest area of the state’s $20 billion state budget, aside from education. Other appropriations subcommittees are set to meet Wednesday and Thursday but the final recommendations for budget cuts headed to a special session of the Utah Legislature on June 18 and 19 will come from the Executive Appropriations Committee, which asked each subcommittee come up with a range of proposed reductions. — Lisa Riley Roche, KSL

When can recovered patients be around others? CDC updates coronavirus guidance

People who have been sick with coronavirus infections should stay away from other people until they've gone at least three days with no fever, have seen symptoms improve, and until it's been 10 days since they first noticed symptoms, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in updated guidance. The CDC updated guidance on when it's safe to leave quarantine, as well as some consumer-friendly guidance on using public transit and ride shares as states loosen restrictions on opening schools, businesses and leaving home. People who have been infected need to be sure they won't spread the virus, even if they feel better, the CDC advised. Read more of the updated guidelines here. — CNN

Utah's number of COVID-19 deaths eclipsed 100 on Tuesday, just over two months after the state reported its first death from the disease.

Wall Street is opening sharply higher as hopes for economic recovery overshadow worries over the coronavirus pandemic.

Utah health officials say there was actually a dip in suicide ideation and drug overdoses after the first Utah case of COVID-19 was reported and a stay-at-home directive was issued in March; however, they’re concerned because numbers are once again rising, and there’s been an increase in stresses that may lead to an uptick.

Weeks after Utah County officials disseminated health department reports that two Utah County businesses had ignored COVID-19 guidelines and forced sick employees to work, the Utah County attorney now says that information was inaccurate.
