BAGHDAD (AP) — A U.S. military official says small rockets struck the Iraqi base hosting American troops and other coalition forces in Baghdad’s Green Zone early Sunday. No casualties have been reported and a building sustained only minor damage. The attack came just before 3:30 a.m. The attack was the latest in a recent series of rocket and mortar strikes on Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops. An Iranian missile attack on Iraq's Ain al-Asad air base on Jan. 8 injured dozens of U.S service members. It was in retaliation for the U.S. drone strike in Baghdad that killed Iran's most powerful general, Qassem Soleimani, on Jan. 3.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency Saturday amid fears the Pearl River at Jackson could reach its highest level in decades. Forecasters believe the river will crest at 38 feet on Sunday. Parts of Jackson and suburban Ridgeland were under evacuation orders, and some people had already filled trucks with furniture and other belongings to get out. Reeves says more than 2,400 homes and other structures in and near Jackson could either be inundated or isolated by the rising waters. Officials say the river is expected to remain high for days, with rain in the forecast for Sunday and Monday.
BEIJING (AP) — Millions of Chinese workers and entrepreneurs are bearing the rising costs of an anti-virus campaign that has shut down large sections of the economy. The government has imposed restrictions nationwide that have stalled travel and sales of real estate and autos. The mounting toll threatens to become a political liability for the ruling Communist Party. Local officials have been told to get back to business but are moving cautiously. Economists say even if auto manufacturing and other industries resume operations as planned, they won't be back to normal until at least mid-March.
EAST POINT, Ga. (AP) — Three people have been wounded in a Valentine's Day shooting at a restaurant owned by “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kandi Burruss. East Point police tell news outlets that a man entered the Old Lady Gang restaurant just outside Atlanta on Friday night and targeted another man. Two bystanders were also wounded. Police say none of the injuries are life-threatening. Police are looking for the shooter. Old Lady Gang serves Southern food and is owned by Burruss and her husband. The East Point location is one of three in the Atlanta area. Burruss is a singer who became famous as part of Xscape in the 1990s.
SAN QUENTIN, Calif. (AP) — A death row inmate died Saturday at a hospital, while the previous day another prisoner was killed after two inmates attacked him, California officials said. John Abel — who was sentenced to death row for killing a man in 1991 during a robbery at a bank in Orange County — died Saturday morning at a hospital, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement. He was 75. In a separate case, officials at the Calipatria State Prison officials are investigating the death Friday of Joseph Martinez, 21, after two other inmates attacked him.
