EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Cassius Winston scored 18 points and Xavier Tillman had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead No. 14 Michigan State in a 79-50 win over Northwestern. The Spartans moved into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten on Wednesday night. The lead in the conference may last only a day because No. 19 Illinois has a chance to pull into a tie Thursday night at home against Minnesota. Pat Spencer scored 11 points for the last-place Wildcats and was their only double-digit scorer in a game they never led.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Lamar Stevens scored nine of his 17 points in the second half and grabbed nine rebounds to lead No. 24 Penn State over Indiana 64-49. Curtis Jones Jr. scored 12 points for the Nittany Lions (15-5, 5-4 Big Ten) who won their third straight and snapped a four-game losing skid to the Hoosiers. Trayce Jackson-Davis led Indiana with 14 points. Justin Smith scored 13 for the Hoosiers (15-6, 5-5 Big Ten) who lost their second in a row after trailing the entire second half.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Kobe King, the second-leading scorer at Wisconsin, says he intends to transfer out of the program. The redshirt sophomore guard announced his decision on Instagram, two days after he did not travel with the team for a game at Iowa. The move appeared to take coach Greg Gard by surprise. Gard says in a statement he's “disappointed” by the move. King wrote in his Instagram post that Wisconsin was “not the right fit.” In more unwelcome news for Wisconsin, guard Brad Davison was suspended one game for a flagrant foul that violated the Big Ten's sportsmanship policy.
UNDATED (AP) — It may be hard to dismiss Illinois in the race for the Big Ten title. The Illini are a half-game behind first-place Michigan State. Illinois is No. 19 in the latest AP Top 25, its highest showing since 2013. The Illini are one of six Big Ten teams ranked between 14th and 25th. Three members of that group — Illinois, Penn State and Rutgers — are shaking up the conference a bit after being largely irrelevant for varying periods. Illinois faces Minnesota on Thursday night.
