TAYLORSVILLE — One man died and another was injured after a shed collapsed near 1908 W. 4700 South on Wednesday afternoon, Unified police confirmed.
The approximately 15-by-15 foot shed-like outbuilding collapsed about 2:11 p.m., according to Unified Fire Authority.
The two men were inside when it fell, authorities said. David Sligar, 64, of Layton, died at the scene and the other man was extricated and transported to a hospital in serious but stable condition. The second man has not been identified.
A neighbor called 911 after she heard screams and found the two men trapped under the shed, said Matthew McFarland, Unified Fire Authority spokesman.
Authorities arrived within three minutes and were able to extricate the injured man within 15 minutes, McFarland said.
Sligar was trapped under the building and died in the incident.
McFarland said authorities don’t know what caused the collapse and noted there was snow on top of the structure.
The shed was in a residential area and not attached to a structure. The entire building collapsed and the walls were displaced, McFarland said. Authorities did not know how old the shed was.
Authorities don’t know if either man owned the home or if they were hired to work on the shed. The incident is under investigation.
Westbound lanes of 4700 South were closed in the area while authorities investigated but were later opened by 7 p.m.
