SALT LAKE CITY – After announcing her intentions to put her senior season on hold to accomplish her goal of competing in the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, University of Utah gymnast MyKayla Skinner is one step closer to that goal.
Skinner will join future Red Rocks Kara Eaker and Grace McCallum on the squad, as well as Simon Biles, Jade Carey and Sunisa Lee on the 2019 World Championships team.
World team selection camp was held over the past weekend where Skinner finished fourth overall out of the 13 participating gymnasts, with an all-around score of 56.050. She placed third on vault, sixth on uneven bars, eighth on balance beam, and fifth on floor.
Skinner competed in the GK U.S. Classic and the U.S. Championships after making her return from college gymnastics to the elite level. Skinner was named to the Senior Nation Team after the U.S. Championships which gave her the opportunity to attend the selection camp.
"We are thrilled with MyKayla's berth on the World Championships team," said Utah head coach Tom Farden in a statement. "She once again has proved that her drive is second to none and her hyper-focus has been rewarded."
The team will travel to Stuttgart, Germany, where they’ll compete at World Championships starting October 4. Carra McManamon is a native of Washington State and is attending the University of Utah. Contact her at cmcmanamon@deseretdigital.com or follow her on Twitter: @curramac22
