SALT LAKE CITY — A man shot outside a Salt Lake house Wednesday remained hospitalized Thursday and was being guarded by police.
The incident is one of two shootings that occurred in Salt Lake County Wednesday night. The second was reported in West Jordan.
Just after 10 p.m., a woman in the 100 West block of Paxton Avenue (1180 South) heard her dog barking and went outside to investigate. She was confronted by at least two men and an altercation ensued, according to Salt Lake police.
During the confrontation, one of the men in the yard pulled out a handgun. That's when a man inside the house came outside with his own handgun and shot one of the men in the yard, police said.
The gunshot victim was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. Police say he is considered a suspect and was being watched by officers. Investigators say the couple at the house have been cooperating with authorities and no other arrests had been made as of Thursday.
Police are investigating to determine whether the incident was a case of self-defense.
No other information was immediately available.
In an unrelated shooting Wednesday, a 16-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet near Jordan Landing. But the boy never reported the incident to police. Rather, doctors at the hospital where he was treated called officers, said West Jordan Police Sgt. JC Holt.
The teenager told investigators that he and two others were driving on the Bangerter Highway with a dog, when they had to pull over to let the dog urinate, Holt said. The group pulled off at Jordan Landing and went behind Zurchers, 7047 Plaza Center Drive, sometime between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
That's when the boy claimed another car that was following them pulled up next to his car and fired at least one round, grazing the teen's arm, Holt said. Rather than call police, the friends drove the boy to a local hospital.
Detectives went back to the area where the victim said he was shot, but they could not find any evidence, Holt said. The boy, whom he described as being cooperative with police, was treated for a minor injury and was later released.
The only description investigators had of the suspect vehicle is a dark colored, possibly blue, sedan.
