WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is standing by his demands for funding for a border wall as another round of shutdown talks fails to break an impasse. Newly empowered House Democrats are planning to step up the pressure on Trump and Republican lawmakers to reopen the government. Trump spent part of Sunday at Camp David for staff meetings but showed no signs of budging on his demand for more than $5 billion for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

BEIJING (AP) — China has sounded a positive note ahead of trade talks with Washington that begin Monday but the two sides face potentially lengthy wrangling over technology and the future of their economic relationship. Both sides have expressed interest in settling their tariff fight over Beijing's technology ambitions. Yet neither has changed its stance despite a Dec. 1 agreement by Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping to postpone further increases.

NEW YORK (AP) — In a Golden Globes chock full of upsets, the Freddie Mercury biopic "Bohemian Rhapsody" took best picture, drama, over Bradley Cooper's heavily favored "A Star is Born" and Glenn Close bested Lady Gaga for best actress. Few winners were seen as more certain than Lady Gaga as best actress in a drama at Sunday's at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. But the veteran actress Close pulled off the shocker for her performance in "The Wife."

UNDATED (AP) — Hundreds of government scientists are missing three major scientific conferences this week because of the partial government shutdown. Attendees of the events describe them as crucial opportunities for scientists from the government, the private sector and academia to exchange research and ideas. Topics include technology, space exploration, extreme weather and climate change. Scientists say the effects from these missed opportunities will be felt for a long time.

CHICAGO (AP) — Nick Foles hit Golden Tate with a 2-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 56 seconds remaining against the NFL's stingiest defense, lifting the Philadelphia Eagles past the Chicago Bears 16-15 in the final wild-card game. Former Eagles kicker Cody Parkey hit the left upright and then the crossbar with a field-goal attempt from 43 yards with 10 seconds remaining, silencing the raucous crowd.
