Missing Draper Scout found safe in Wyoming

PINEDALE, Wyoming — A Boy Scout from Draper missing for two days in the Wyoming wilderness has been found.

The Sublette County Sheriff's Office in Wyoming confirmed late Sunday night that 13-year-old Garrett Hunter had been found by a volunteer search group and was in good health. More than 30 self-deployed family and friends of the Hunters had arrived in the area to help assist with the search, the sheriff's office reported earlier Sunday.

Sheriff's Sgt. Travis Bingham did not immediately know in what area the boy was found. He said the search group would stay with Garrett through the night and then hike him out Monday morning.

The discovery came hours after the sheriff's office had announced that the search had been suspended for the evening.

Garrett was last seen Saturday morning in the Wind River range area near Elkhart Park. He was spotted between 1000 Lake and Mary's Lake, and was possibly headed toward Seneca Lake, Bingham had said earlier in the day.

He was part of a Boy Scout group taking part in a 50-mile hike.

"The group was ending their 50-mile journey and headed back to the Elkhart trailhead via the Pole Creek Trail. It is unknown when exactly Garrett became separated from the group," Bingham said.

The last contact the Scouts had with Garrett was about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, he said. Search crews were contacted about 2 p.m.

Officials were concerned that Garrett, who has Asperger's syndrome, might not approach anyone for help.

He was equipped with a backpack that had a sleeping bag, some food and a water filter, according to the sheriff's office. The area that was searched was described as a thick, wooded area.
