LANGLEY — Is “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” the best movie of the summer so far?

Yep, it sure is.

Sorry Marvel fans. Although “Avengers: Infinity War” was a fun and entertaining movie, as was “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” this sixth installment of the "Mission: Impossible" series has them beat.

“Mission: Impossible — Fallout” reteams screenwriter/director Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise who have worked on numerous projects together, including "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation."

This time, Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his IMF (Impossible Missions Force) team have to track down some bad guys and stop them from using plutonium to make atomic bombs. The story isn’t anything new, but with how good the action is, you don’t really care.

What I loved

The action sequences are memorable

I have seen a ton of action movies in my lifetime. Most just come and go, and you forget about them quickly.

There are action scenes in this movie you will not forget. Does it have the usual stuff we have seen in the previous five installments? Yes — you will see Tom Cruise running at full speed and you will see car and motorcycle chases, which are all done well in this movie.

But there are three action scenes that just stayed with me all the way after the movie was done. They were spectacular and crazy entertaining.

The cast is convincing

Tom Cruise is dedicated. If you have a chance, Google some of his stunts from this movie and how they were accomplished, and you will be blown away. He even broke his ankle filming one stunt, which actually made it into the film.

One thing I feel like Cruise is becoming a pro at is his hand-to-hand combat fighting scenes. This "Mission: Impossible" seems to portray a little more brutality to the fighting than the others, but it just seemed more real. There is one fight scene in this movie that was just done incredibly well.

Henry Cavill was also fantastic in this film, mustache and all. Cavill, who has played Superman in several movies, is proving to be more than just a one-time superhero actor. Simon Pegg was great as usual for comic relief, and Rebecca Ferguson shows why she is such in demand nowadays.

The pacing is perfect

“Mission: Impossible — Fallout” clocks in at almost 2 1/2 hours long.

It does not feel that long at all. Some of the other "Mission: Impossible" movies suffered due to some very slow exposition scenes that were in the film to explain elaborate plans or to figure out why the villain is doing what he is doing.

This movie did not have that problem. From start to finish you are engaged with the film and never find yourself bored.

What I didn’t like

Honestly, I tried to think of stuff I didn’t like, but I really couldn’t find much to complain about. Is the movie perfect? No, but it was just so entertaining and moved you along at the right pace.

Conclusion

As I said, this has been my favorite movie of the summer thus far. I know Marvel fans will debate that. "Avengers" and "Ant-Man" were good but this movie just had a little more to offer.

The big question now is how do they top this "Mission: Impossible"? I don’t know, but I look forward to seeing what the filmmakers will do.

“Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is rated PG-13 for violence and intense sequences of action, and for brief strong language.
