ST. GEORGE — Police located the body of a 23-year-old woman in St. George early Monday after she went missing nearly a week earlier.

Search and rescue teams found Amanda Matthews’ body obscured by a tree just off the trail in the Tuweap wash area. She appears to have died by suicide and there is no suspicion of foul play, St. George police spokeswoman Lona Trombley said.

Matthews disappeared Wednesday and was last seen near the Tuweap Trailhead where her car was later found. Matthews frequently hiked on her own, but her family was unsure whether she was well-equipped to hike the day she left, Trombley said.

Matthews was considered endangered when she was reported missing because she did not have the medication she normally took.
