ALPINE, Wyo. (AP) — Officials plan to keep a road closed while a landslide threatens to continue damming up a river in western Wyoming.
A series of earthquakes followed by snow caused the landslide in February. Ground movement has slowed considerably but the once 30-foot-wide (10-meter-wide) Greys River is now constricted to a channel just 6 feet (2 meters) wide.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports officials worry the growing dam could give way, unleashing the water that has begun to back up along Greys River Road.
Bridger-Teton National Forest officials plan to keep a more than 17-mile (27-kilometer) stretch of the popular snowmobiling road closed for at least six more weeks.
The gravel road is also busy during the summer but experts say ground movement could pick up again during spring snowmelt.
