OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Authorities say seven of the 11 hate crimes counted in an annual FBI report for a northern Utah county were misclassified.
The Standard-Examiner reports authorities in Weber County linked the uptick in hate crime last year to clerical errors made while police were filing the incident reports.
The newspaper uncovered the errors after examining the related local police reports.
The city of Ogden had three improperly reported hate crimes. North Ogden recorded two erroneous reports and Pleasant View had one.
North Ogden police officials say the wrong box was checked in the two cases due to the new computer system.
Pleasant View officials say the hate crime report was misidentified because of a new records management system.
