SALT LAKE CITY — A man who police say shot and killed another man in the parking lot of a Murray business has been arrested in Oregon and charged with murder.
Lucas Marc Deprey, 19, who is listed as homeless and goes by the monikers "Chucky" and "Jesse James," had a $1 million arrest warrant issued for him Thursday on charges of murder, a first-degree felony; possession of a weapon by a restricted person, a second-degree felony; and obstructing justice, a second-degree felony.
Deprey was being held Thursday in the Springfield Municipal Jail in Springfield, Oregon, awaiting extradition to Utah.
On Oct. 25, Ever Hernandez was sitting in his car in the parking lot of Check City, 98 E. 4500 South, just before 5:30 p.m. when Deprey walked up to the car, opened the front passenger door, leaned in and shot him, according to charging documents.
Hernandez accelerated out of the parking lot and drove onto State Street, traveling perpendicular to the road across the lanes, and ended up T-boning another vehicle and hitting a third car. Police found him deceased in the vehicle with a gunshot wound to his head, charges state.
Using surveillance video from businesses in the area, police were able to retrace Deprey's footsteps to nearby Deseret Industries, where articles of clothing he had dumped were found, according to court documents.
Investigators continued following Deprey using surveillance videos from nearby businesses and watched as he stepped onto a TRAX train. A Utah Transit Authority police officer who saw the surveillance video recognized the man as Deprey, charges state.
Shortly after the shooting, police released some of the surveillance video images of Deprey to the public. The man later contacted an acquaintance via social media and made mention of the shooting, telling that person, "My picture was on there," according to charging documents.
"Deprey then admitted to shooting the victim and asked for money to assist him in fleeing to another state," charges state. "Deprey stated he was stranded in Oregon."
Instead, that individual went to police Tuesday. Investigators then arranged to have money sent to a Western Union in Springfield, Oregon. When Deprey showed up to collect the money, officers arrested him, according to the charges.
As Deprey was being arrested, charges state, detectives noticed an incoming text on his phone that asked, "At what point did you shoot him?"
A motive for the shooting was not given in charging documents.
In July, Deprey was convicted on several counts of aggravated assault as a resolution for four cases.
Between March and April, Deprey threatened several people with either a gun or hatchet, including a Walmart employee and a TRAX rider, charges state.
