ATLANTA (AP) — No. 25 Tennessee rallied from a pair of 14-point deficits in the second half and stopped a two-point conversion in the second overtime, stunning Georgia Tech 42-41 despite giving up five rushing touchdowns to TaQuon Marshall and getting thoroughly dominated statistically. Bolstering the outlook for embattled coach Butch Jones, the Volunteers pulled off a remarkable season-opening victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in a game they seemed to have no business winning.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois will have surgery Tuesday on his torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Coach Jimbo Fisher says the sophomore will be out for the rest of the season and faces four to seven months of rehabilitation. Fisher says James Blackman will replace Francois. This is only the second time in school history a quarterback has started as a true freshman. The third-ranked Seminoles host Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday.
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson's win against overmatched Kent State served the purpose of getting the fifth-ranked Tigers off to a strong start. Clemson knows things will get tougher from here, starting with 12th-ranked Auburn coming to Death Valley on Saturday night. Linebacker Kendall Joseph said while winning the opener was nice, it was not Clemson's truest test.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina State safety Freddie Phillips Jr. will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Coach Dave Doeren says he will redshirt the season. Phillips was the backup to Shawn Boone at the nickelback position in the Wolfpack's secondary. He was hurt during N.C. State's loss to South Carolina on Saturday in Charlotte.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's quarterback uncertainty has extended into the season. Coach Larry Fedora wouldn't commit to whether LSU graduate transfer Brandon Harris or redshirt freshman Chazz Surratt would start this weekend against No. 16 Louisville. Harris won a preseason battle to earn the starting job for the season-opening loss to California, but Surratt got most of the work after halftime as the Tar Heels hunt for a permanent successor to No. 2 overall NFL draft pick Mitch Trubisky.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall says starting cornerback Tim Harris will miss the rest of the season after sustaining a wrist injury in the Cavaliers' season opener. It's the second consecutive season the senior will miss most of the season. Mendenhall says he believes the NCAA would grant Harris another season of eligibility if he decides to pursue one.
