NEW YORK (AP) — Luis Severino dominated over seven innings, Didi Gregorius and Todd Frazier homered, and the New York Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-5 today to sweep the two-game series. The Yankees have won six of eight, inching closer to first-place Boston in the AL East.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Evan Longoria and Steven Souza Jr. homered and Alex Cobb pitched seven strong innings for the Tampa Bay Rays in a 5-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Longoria's two-run shot off Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez, his 15th of the season, put Tampa Bay up 2-1 in the sixth after a walk to Mallex Smith.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired reliever Anthony Swarzak in a trade with the Chicago White Sox. The 31-year-old Swarzak is 4-3 with a career-low 2.23 ERA in 41 games this year. The right-hander got four outs for his first career save in Chicago's 3-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The Brewers are fighting with the Cubs for the NL Central lead.
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Katie Ledecky's bid to win six gold medals at the world championships ended when she was beaten in the 200-meter freestyle by Italy's Federica Pellegrini. Ledecky settled for the silver medal, tying for second with Australia's Emma McKeon. The United States broke a pair of world records while winning the 4x100 mixed medley relay at the world championships today. Matt Grevers, Lilly King, Caeleb Dressel and Simone Manuel won gold in the evening final with a time of 3 minutes, 38.56 seconds.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns have signed big man Alan Williams to a three-year, $17 million contract. The restricted free agent agreed to the deal earlier this month and the Suns announced he re-signed today. The 24-year-old Williams averaged 7.4 points on 51 percent shooting and 6.2 rebounds in 47 games last season, his second in the NBA.
