Alex Cabrero reportingAuthorities are not sure why a 19-year-old broke into a Cedar City home Wednesday morning. The break-in ended with a fatal stabbing.
According to police, a the 19-year man broke into the home of his ex-boss -- bound the man and his family with duct tape -- and held them at gunpoint. The teen had recently been fired from his job. The home is in the Flying L subdivision in Cedar City.
The man's 17-year old step son was able to free himself and grab a hunting knife. He then stabbed the intruder five times. The intruder then left the house, eventually collapsing outside, dying from his wound.
Deputies are not sure if the motive was robbery or - as the family believes - revenge to get back at the man who fired him from construction job.
Regardless, the Iron County Sheriff believes the 17-year-old son did what he needed to do to protect his family.
The name of the 19-year-old has not been released. Deputies are still trying to contact family in Las Vegas.
The Iron County District Attorney is looking into the case to determine if the stabbing was justified.
