PARIS (AP) — French authorities say a man used a revolver that shoots birdshot to take a female soldier hostage today at a Paris airport, then grabbed her military-grade assault rifle. That's when soldiers fired at the man, killing him. The Paris prosecutor says the attacker also carried a container of gasoline that he tossed to the ground, and said he wanted to die in the name of Allah. The attacker was identified as a Frenchman with a criminal record who was flagged for suspected radicalism during a spell in prison.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somalia's government is blaming the Saudi-led coalition for what it calls a "horrific" attack on a boat packed with Somali refugees. At least 42 people were killed in yesterday's assault by a military vessel and a helicopter gunship off the coast of Yemen.

HONOLULU (AP) — The Justice Department is asking a federal judge to clarify his order blocking President Donald Trump's revised travel ban. A motion filed yesterday asks U.S. District Judge Derrick Watson to clarify that the temporary restraining order he issued only applies to the president's temporary ban on travel from six mostly Muslim countries, not the freeze on refugees. The office of Hawaii's attorney general says it believes the court's order was clear and there's no need for clarification.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An appeals court has refused to stop the imminent flow of oil through the Dakota Access pipeline. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has denied a request from the Standing Rock and Cheyenne River Sioux tribes for an emergency order. That means the pipeline to move North Dakota oil to Illinois could be operating as early as Monday. The tribes have been trying to stop that from happening while their legal challenge against the pipeline proceeds.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after a plane got stuck in a snowdrift after landing at New York's LaGuardia Airport this morning. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the pilot went to turn off the runway to taxi to the gate, and the plane got stuck. It had to be pulled out by a tug. There were 73 passengers aboard the Republic Airline flight operating under Delta. No one was injured.
