SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A group of business leaders is moving ahead with a push to get Utah voters to raise the state income tax to generate an extra $750 million annually to address a teacher shortage, crowded classrooms and other school needs. Officials with the group Our Schools Now say they appreciate an extra $120 million Utah lawmakers put toward enrollment growth and teacher pay this year, but said it's not enough. Utah's Republican legislators and Gov. Gary Herbert have not supported the proposal.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Sierra Club lawyers who've preached against the environmental evils of coal-burning power plants for decades are trying to force the closure of the last one in renewably rich Nevada with arguments based on a different sort of green: money. Critics of the Valmy coal plant scored a key victory recently when state regulators ordered Nevada's largest utility to reassess its economic efficiency after experts projected it will cost ratepayers $30 million under current plans to keep it open until 2025.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Feeding vaccine nuggets to prairie dogs could help bring back the endangered black-footed ferret. The ferrets feed almost exclusively on prairie dogs but plague can wipe out prairie dog colonies, leaving ferrets without enough to eat. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others plan to vaccinate prairie dogs against plague in several Western states later this year.

SPRINGVILLE, Utah (AP) — A drag-racing Corvette crashed into a small plane at the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport. The Daily Herald reports that according to Sgt. Cade Harding with Spanish Fork Public Safety, a Corvette and a Porsche were drag racing on the taxiway of the airport on Friday when the Corvette struck a single-engine plane that had stopped on the taxiway for a mechanical issue.
