NEW YORK (AP) — Winter isn't finished with the Northeast yet. A powerful storm with high winds and up to a foot of snow is expected to hit the region next week. The National Weather Service says there's a blizzard watch for coastal regions including New York City and Boston for Monday night into Tuesday. There's also a winter storm watch for an area that includes much of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, upstate New York and New England.
NEW YORK (AP) — An outspoken Manhattan federal prosecutor known for crusading against public corruption says he was fired after refusing to resign. In a tweet today, Preet Bharara (buh-RAH'-ruh) also said being the US Attorney in the Southern District of New York will "forever be the greatest honor of my professional life." Bharara, who is 48-years-old, was appointed by former President Barack Obama in 2009 and served over seven years in the post.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The House intelligence committee is asking the executive branch for any evidence that would support President Donald Trump's claim that his phones were tapped at Trump Tower during last year's election. Trump has said his predecessor, Barack Obama, had the phones tapped but has not provided evidence to support his claim and has asked Congress to investigate.
GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — The head of Guatemala's protective services agency is being barred from leaving the country as the death toll continues to climb following a fire that began when mattresses were set ablaze during a protest by residents at a youth shelter. Authorities continue to search for answers about the fire on Wednesday that led to the deaths of 39 girls. The disaster has put a spotlight on alleged failings in Guatemala's child protective services.
THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Relations are worsening between the Netherlands and Turkey. Turkey's prime minister says his country will strongly respond to what he calls Dutch authorities' "unacceptable treatment" toward Turkish ministers who've been prevented from addressing Turkish citizens in the Netherlands. The Turkish officials are pushing constitutional reforms to expand presidential powers. The Dutch see that as a step backward from democracy.
