WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says if Israel decides to be just one state, it can't be both Jewish and democratic. And Kerry warned that "it won't ever really be at peace." He made the comments in his final policy speech on the Mideast. Kerry called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government "the most right-wing in Israel's history" and said it is allowing the country's future to be defined by settlers who oppose living in peace with Palestinians. Netanyahu responded that Israelis "do not need to be lectured about the importance of peace by foreign leaders."

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior U.S. defense official is confirming that a top Islamic State military commander was killed by a coalition airstrike in Syria on Monday. The official says Abu Jandal al-Kuwaiti was a key leader of the group in Raqqa. No other details were available. IS supporters on social media had indicated on Tuesday that he had been killed.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A federal judge will rule next month on whether to release confidential documents related to the George Washington Bridge lane-closing trial. Several media organizations filed a motion to have the documents unsealed, including a list of unindicted coconspirators in the case. Two former allies of Republican Gov. Chris Christie were convicted in an alleged political revenge plot. Bill Baroni and Bridget Kelly are scheduled to be sentenced in February, but have appealed their convictions.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — President Barack Obama has designated two national monuments at sites in Utah and Nevada, the latest effort to protect environmentally sensitive areas of public lands. The Bears Ears National Monument in Utah will cover 1.35 million acres in the Four Corners region. In Nevada, a 300,000-acre Gold Butte National Monument outside Las Vegas would protect a scenic and ecologically fragile area. Native groups and conservationists are applauding. There is opposition from state Republicans and energy backers.

DENVER (AP) — The older brother of JonBenet Ramsey is suing CBS and others for $750 million, saying his reputation was ruined after a television series that concluded he killed his 6-year-old sister two decades ago. Burke Ramsey claims that the network, its production company and the experts interviewed in the six-part series on the unsolved murder conspired to defame him for publicity and profit. The six-part television docuseries "The Case of JonBenet Ramsey" aired in September ahead of the 20th anniversary of JonBenet's death.
