KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The U.S. military says an explosion at a U.S. airfield in Afghanistan early Saturday morning killed two U.S. servicemen and two American contractors. Another 16 U.S. service members and one Polish soldier were wounded. The Taliban claimed responsibility. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter says "We will not be deterred in our mission to protect our homeland and help Afghanistan secure its own future."
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Some Mexicans are protesting President-elect Donald Trump's policy statements. A group gathered today at Mexico City's Independence monument expressing concern about a possible wave of deportations. A school teacher says Mexico simply is not prepared to receive a large number of deported migrants. He says the structural and labor conditions do not exist. He says it would add to the "unrest" that's already in Mexico.
ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey is warning its citizens about traveling to the United States, citing violent protests following Tuesday's presidential election as well as increasing verbal and physical attacks and harassment of an "anti-immigrant" and "racist" nature. The Foreign Ministry says the anti-Donald Trump demonstrations "occasionally featured acts of crime and violence" and noted that security forces had detained many demonstrators.
EDINBURG, Texas (AP) — Federal officials say 150 Border Patrol agents will be deployed to South Texas from Arizona, California and elsewhere to help process a spike in immigrants who have been apprehended after illegally entering the U.S. The additional agents will assist with screening and processing immigrants taken into custody along the border in the Rio Grande Valley, many of whom are unaccompanied children and families.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Authorities say an armed man who stabbed five people at a mental health facility near Pittsburgh before he was shot by police will be charged with attempted homicide. Allegheny County police say the 38-year-old will also face charges of aggravated assault, attempted arson and risking a catastrophe following Friday afternoon's attack in Homestead. Authorities say he dropped his knife but not the gun before he was shot by SWAT officers.
