The Salt Lake International Airport is resurfacing several of its roads. That means three lanes of traffic are temporarily shut down.
The project started early this morning and will take seven to 10 days to complete. During that time, there will be an alternate way to drop off and pick up travelers.
Some people were confused to see orange barrels and cones closing lanes of traffic at the airport today.
Nate Kanig said, "I fly every week, so this was a real shock to show up today and have that happen."
Rachelle Dimock told KSL, "It was confusing, let's put it that way."
But delays so far have only lasted a few minutes.
Bryce Hopkin said, "It was a little slower getting in, but not too bad."
Currently all three drop-off lanes next to the terminals are closed for resurfacing. So if you need to drop someone off, you will be directed to the two far lanes. If you are picking someone up, airport authorities ask that you tell your traveler to cross the sky bridge that connects the terminals to the garage. You can pick them up there.
"We're re-milling the whole thing and resurfacing it. So in the meantime we're asking that the passengers and those picking them up be aware that the project is going on and that the lanes have shifted for pick up and drop off," the airport's Director of Public Relations and Marketing, Barbara Gann, said.
The three lanes that are closed handle the bulk of the airport traffic. Airport authorities say the resurfacing is routine maintenance.
During resurfacing, the sky cap will continue to operate from its current location. Passengers will need to walk across the road under construction to get to that service.
Airport authorities say this construction project should not slow things down too much, but travelers might want to give themselves a few extra minutes just in case.
Devin Moyes said, "It actually seemed like it was done pretty well, and we got through and are ready to go now."
