KHAZER, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led airstrikes launched coordinated military operations early today as the long-awaited fight to wrest the city of Mosul (MOH'-sul) from the Islamic State group got underway. BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian opposition activists are reporting that airstrikes on a rebel-held, eastern neighborhood in the city of Aleppo have killed at least 13 people, including children. Rebel-controlled parts of Aleppo have been subjected to the worst aerial attacks since a cease-fire brokered by the U.S. and Russia collapsed in September.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says high school graduation rates have reached a record high of 83.2 percent, continuing a steady increase that shows improvement across all ethnic groups. President Barack Obama plans to talk about the gains when he visits a Washington, D.C. high school this morning.

Experts on a government-commissioned panel held their first meeting today to study how to accommodate 82-year-old Emperor Akihito's apparent wish.
