WASHINGTON (AP) — A U.S. official says multiple missiles have been fired again from a Houthi-controlled region in Yemen targeting an American warship in the Red Sea. The official says the ship, the USS Mason, launched counter-measures and was not hit. This is the third time in about a week that the USS Mason and other US ships have been targeted by missiles from the coastal region of Yemen.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A powerful storm is pounding the Northwest. Trees and power lines are coming down and thousands of people have lost power in Oregon and Washington. The National Weather Service says winds are gusting above 50 mph in the Portland area and that the strongest winds will hit Seattle soon. No injuries have been reported.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is rolling out a new, multipoint plan to combat drug addiction as he talks about the role that prescription drugs play in the heroin epidemic. At a rally today in New Hampshire, Trump said he wants the Food and Drug Administration to speed up approval of abuse-deterring drugs. He says he also wants to reduce the supply of drugs like oxycodone, and wants to make it harder to mail drugs like fentanyl to users and dealers.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Transcripts disclosed by WikiLeaks show Hillary Clinton generally avoided direct criticism of Wall Street as she examined the causes and responses to the financial meltdown during a series of paid speeches to Goldman Sachs. The disclosures contain no new bombshells but are likely to reinvigorate concerns among Bernie Sanders supporters that Clinton is too close to Wall Street. The transcripts were released today.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police say two of the victims wounded when gunfire erupted in a Los Angeles restaurant are in grave condition. The shooting early today in a working class neighborhood west of downtown left 3 dead and 12 wounded. Investigators spent the day scouring the area around the site, where the restaurant was operating out of a converted home. The LAPD is seeking a suspect described as a black male, possibly accompanied by a woman.
