TOOELE — A passing train snagged a downed power line on the tracks and ripped 25 power poles to the ground Sunday, knocking out power in several areas, fire officials said.

High winds blew the power line onto the tracks in the foothills east of Droubay Road, and the train pulled down the poles along Bates Canyon Road and the railroad tracks, according to the North Tooele Fire District. Lines were also down at 5300 North and Oswego Road.

Monday morning update
  • 77 customers still without power
  • Residents asked to turn off all non-essential products using power

Traffic signals from Erda Way to I-80 in Lake Point were out. Power will be off for a significant amount of time, according to the district.

Late Sunday, the Tooele County School District announced that three schools, Stansbury High School, Rose Springs Elementary and Stansbury Park Elementary, will be closed on Monday due to the power outage. Students who live in the affected areas attending other schools will also be excused as needed, the school district also said on its Facebook page.

Buses will continue to run as normal with the exception of the three closed schools, said Tooele County School District communications director Marie Denson.

Rocky Mountain Power estimated the power would be restored to the affected areas by 11:30 p.m. on Monday.
