SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The National Weather Service says a small tornado touched down south of Ogden in northern Utah.

Meteorologist Monica Traphagan said the tornado hit the city of Washington Terrace about 3:45 p.m. Thursday. She says it wasn't immediately clear if the tornado caused any damage.

Other storms in the area that produced winds in excess of 70 mph caused damage to trees and other property near the city of Layton. That's about 15 miles south of Washington Terrace.

Traphagan says tornados are a rarity in northern Utah, with only about one a year reported.
