CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) — The Mormon temple in Cedar City completed a landmark step in its construction with the addition of the angel Moroni statue.
The Spectrum in St. George reports (http://bit.ly/2d2v6Hw ) that hundreds of onlookers gathered at the site as crews placed the gold statue at the top of the temple tower Thursday afternoon.
The placement was initially delayed as even construction workers wanted their picture taken next to the statue.
The angelic statue will also serve as a lightning rod.
A Mormon temple in Bountiful had its Moroni statue replaced in June after it was damaged during a lightning strike.
Spires topped with sculptures depicting the angel Moroni with a trumpet are a signature of temples built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints around the world.
