WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — John Millman upset top-seeded Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3 in the Winston-Salem Open quarterfinals Thursday.
Millman advanced to his first ATP World Tour semifinal. He will face 16th-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over 12th-seeded Alexander Kuznetsov of Russia.
Millman, a 27-year-old Australian, is unseeded and 81st in the ATP rankings.
Gasquet, who is 15th in the ATP rankings, holds the No. 13 seed in the U.S. Open, which begins Monday in New York. The Frenchman was playing his fifth match in six weeks after retiring in the fourth round at Wimbledon because of back problems. He returned last week in Cincinnati and lost in the second round.
Second-sededed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain beat Yeh-hsun Lu of Taiwan 6-3, 6-2. Agut, ranked 17th and seeded 15th in the U.S. Open, is chasing his fifth career title. He improved to 3-0 against Lu.
Agut will face ninth-seeded Viktor Troicki of Serbia, a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 winner over 15th-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain.
